ALCOHOL PROBLEMS
The most serious and
widespread form of drug abuse in the world is a alcohol abuse. Millions
of people drink alcohol regularly and many mistakenly, do not regard
themselves as alcoholics. in reality, however, regular drinking can
gradually evolve into heavier alcohol consumption and the inability to
stop voluntarily. A person who drinks regularly may never become "drunk"
or have problems at home or at work but may still be damaging his or her
health. the heart, brain, nervous system, stomach, and liver can all be
damaged by alcohol. Drinking also substantially increases the risk of
cancers of the mouth, throat, larynx, and esophagus. The next few pages
discuss the damage that excessive consumption of alcohol can cause.
Regular alcohol consumption can
damage all your internal organs even if it does not appear to cause
drunkenness. Several serious diseases occur much more frequently in
regular drinkers than in the rest of the population. Some possible
effects of alcohol on various parts of the body are summarized in the
Box below.
