THE DANGERS OF
TOBACCO
Smoking is the leading preventable cause of death.
If you are a regular smoker, you are probably losing about five and a half
minutes of life expectancy for each cigarette you smoke. Up to age 65, people
who smoke 20 or more cigarettes per day die at almost twice the rate for non
smokers in the same age group. Cigarette smoking is a major case of lung cancer.
Yet despite the vast medical evidence supporting such statistics and the
publicity given to them most heavy smokers continue to smoke. While many smokers
have stopped smoking, thousands of adolescents every year begin to smoke, often
to appear more mature or because peer pressure. Research indicates that about 85
percent of adolescent smokers continue to smoke as adults.
