Car Rentals
"...Renting a car
today is easier, more fun and less expensive than it’s ever been..."
what you need to know to keep you on the move
on your honeymoon
A
lot of people think renting a car is one of the more tedious parts of planning
a vacation. Car rental
companies have set out to change that, streamlining the process and offering
a wider selection of cars. Renting a car today is easier, more fun and
less expensive than it’s ever been — even more so if you plan ahead. Here,
some of the latest innovations and expert advice.
Dream cars.
Sports-car rentals have been available since the
1960s, but the variety of fantasy car offerings keeps expanding.
Almost anywhere, you can rent a car that matches your destination, such
as a Jeep for exploring Aruba’s desert or a red convertible to take on
a whirl through sunny Los Angeles.
High-tech reservations.
Like everybody else, car rental companies have
gone on line. Never heard of the subcompact car they’re offering? Visit
the company’s Website and click on the model to see it on screen. If you
like what you see, you can reserve it on the spot.
High-tech services.
The computer age makes life easier once you’re
in the car too. The latest: GPS (Global Positioning Satellite) navigation
systems that show you where you are, when to turn, and even link to services
that find you if you’re lost or need help.
No-wait paperwork.
Pre-registration allows you to finalize credit-card
information and car selection well before you’re in the office — so the
two of you can be off and driving faster than you could hop a cab. And
instant returns really mean just that: Using handheld computers, rental
agents relieve you of the car in the parking lot, and simply hand you a
receipt.
Miles to go.
Just like the airlines,
the major rental-car companies have frequent-traveler programs. A bonus
of joining: Your preferences and credit card info will be stored by the
company (for future rentals), speeding up the process and letting you accrue
credits toward free air travel as well as free car rentals.
The fine print.
As hard as rental-car companies are working to
make things easier for you, there are some steps you should take to keep
things rolling smoothly. Check ahead. Ask your insurance and credit-card
companies what coverage they provide for rental cars. If you are traveling
outside the U.S., make sure the coverage applies in your destinations.
Read your contract carefully to check on items such as insurance waivers
and fuel and drop-off charges. Add-on costs for these and other “services”
can be downright shocking if you’re not prepared.
Don’t get carded.
Many companies don’t rent cars to drivers under
25; some waive the age requirement if you pay a daily surcharge (usually
$10 to $15). Also, if you don’t have a major credit card, expect to hand
over a refundable cash deposit — $1,000 is not unusual.
Go the distance?
Discount car-rental firms are often located at
a distance from the airport and provide shuttle service from the airport
to their office. Decide if the savings are worth the extra travel time.
