I was running a small manufacturing business of Manufacturing Injection Molded Thread protectors for Oilfield exploration and production tubing, casing and drill pipes in Houston, Texas. I established this business in January, 1980 oil prices crashed for USD 34 to USD 10 per barrel in a matter of 20 days resulting in the entire oilfield exploration was stopped and the production was cut to less than half. Our entire customer base was wiped off. It was as that time I decided to look for alternative business. Pakistan being my country of birth was a definite option. I was also lucky to have some Pakistani Government officials who placed their faith in my ability and gave me encouragement and incentives to start Injection Molding for major thermo plastic parts of car namely bumper, Instrument panel and Radiator grills. It has been rewarding Company since the first year the sales gone up by 10 times.

In October 1998, Bestway's $ 150 million Cement Plant at Hattar (Pakistan) was inaugurated. This created 600 direct jobs in the North West Frontier Province . As for the role of overseas Pakistanis in the homeland's development, he is convinced that the expatriates can help their motherland in a big way. "You may know that Bestway has built a cement factory in Haripur, an investment of some $ 150 million which is now producing a million tones in the current year-contributing to the country's economic expansion adding. Other can follow suit". In terms of practical, direct assistance, the expatriates generally support specific projects back home and Sir Anwar Pervez is one of the front runners.

Lucky Cement Limited

Lucky Cement Limited, sponsored by the well known "Younus Brothers Group - the largest textile export house in Pakistan" - is the 3rd largest plant in Pakistan with a capacity of 1.386 million tons per annum. The plant is located in Pezu, Distt. Lakki Marwat, NWFP and has two production lines, each with a capacity of 693,000 tons per annum ordinary Portland Cement.

The plant has been supplied by China under license of world renowned manufacturers such as Lurgi, O&K, Pfiffer, Onada, Haver & Bocker, Miller & Polusis. The plant is managed by qualified and expert cement field specialists with major emphasis on maintaining high quality of cement through stringent quality control. The company, apart from its major investment of over Rs. 3 billion in purchasing the plant, is investing a lot to procure additional equipment in order to boost the output and increase the run factor and to make the plant work more efficiently. The company also owns a Power Generation Plant - Lucky Power Tech, to supply un-interruptible power to the cement plant.

Siemens Pak Ltd.

Siemens Pakistan Engineering Company Ltd., was founded in 1953 as a private limited company. In 1963 the company was converted into a public limited and in 1978 it was listed in the Stock Exchange. Siemens Aktiengesellschaft (Siemens AG) Germany holds 64% of the total shareholding.

Nestle

The joint venture between Milkpak Ltd. And Nestle S.A. came about in 1988 and the company was renamed as Nestle Milkpak Ltd. Prior to that, Milkpak Ltd., produced UHT milk, butter, cream, desi ghee and fruit drinks at Sheikhupura factory. 21 branded product lines were added during 1990 to 1998.

Nestle Milkpak operates the largest and an extremely efficient milk collection system in the country, which enables it to collect the highest quality milk for production of UHT and powder milks as well as other milk based products. The company voluntarily provides extension services of farmers in the area of animal husbandry and livestock breed improvement.

Nestle Milkpak entered the export market in 1993 with exports of Rs.3.2 million to Afghanistan. Growing steadily over the years, its exports stood at Rs.321 million by June, 1998. Currently, it's overseas markets include the UAE, UK, USA, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Central Asian States.

In the social sector, the company provides over 1,100 job opportunities for skilled, unskilled and professional manpower. It plays a remarkable role in vitalizing the rural economy by disbursing over Rs.1.37 billion annually against milk purchases, benefiting over five million household members of the dairy farmers.

Three years down the line when there will be no textile quotas there is going to be very tough competition to meet international quality standards, making international lab testing a prerequisite towards survival in the global export trade. In this context companies like Knitwear, which are already meeting these stringent quality control standards will be the only ones to be able to compete internationally. This is a wake up call to Pakistani manufacturers and time to learn from companies like Knitwear on how to compete successfully globally.
