CTP created on 1st JAN 1981 by virtue of Presidential Order No. 17 & 18 of 1980.
Reasons
Constitutionally & administratively a separate police
organization was required to be set up for the Capital Territory.
Basically the future security perception necessitated its creation on account of location of:
A large number of foreign
missions, diplomatic community, federal Govt. secretariat, location of international organizations, the future shifting of Aiwan-e Sadder/ Secretariat prime Minister house/ Secretariat , and other
Government., defense, and corporate, financial, commercial establishments.
The Other reasons included:
(a) Maintenance of Public order
(b) Crime Control.
Initially CTP comprising of 3160 men/officers was set up under the command of an IGP for a population of 3,40,000.
In 1998 we have a force of 7165 men/officers for a population of 625,096 out of which 1855 are involved with watch and ward.
Total area of ICT 3624 sq. km is divided into 9 police stations. There is one Women Police Station as well where FIR and other registers are maintained. The lock up
of women police station is being used for keeping female accused, while in police custody.
There are 13 Police Pickets.
